BIO

Joe Murphy joined the NFF team in 2024 as the Pike-San Isabel National Forest Project Coordinator. Previously, Joe spent seven years as the Forester and Wildland Fire Program Manager at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is a Society of American Foresters “Certified Forester” holding numerous wildland fire qualifications and completed a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the University of Tennessee in 2003.

Joe began his forest and fuels management career working throughout the US on multiple seasonal crews for the US Forest Service and The Nature Conservancy. The focus for these seasonal positions included forest and fuels management, conservation, wildfire suppression, emergency management, timber stand improvement, environmental education, social justice, and prescribed fire. In 2013 Joe volunteered with the Peace Corps in Malawi Africa as a Community Based Natural Resources volunteer improving the capacity of Makura Village and other surrounding communities. He then served as the first forester for the Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation in South Carolina. There he focused on educating primarily historically underserved communities on the multitude of opportunities available in forest management and connecting them with the entities that can successfully complete prescribed operations.

He enjoys Major League Baseball, gardening, reading, card and board games, travel, and just about anything related to music. Joe and his fiancé, along with their menagerie of turtles and lizards, split their time between Colorado Springs and Pueblo.
